Volunteer Information & Literacy Evening

This Wednesday, 28th September, Dublin City South will be hosting another of our Volunteer Information Evenings from 6:15pm - 7:30pm in the Irish Aid Centre on 27-31 Upper O’Connell Street. Set in an informal setting a number of speakers will talk about their organisations and the volunteer opportunities currently on offer, followed by questions and answers.

The evening is being run as part of Active Citizenship Week and the National Day of Volunteering and the theme for next Wednesday’s event is "Education and Literacy".

Speakers for the evening include Jean Collender from the Matt Talbot Community Trust. The Trust was founded to work in solidarity with young disadvantaged adults, mostly young men over 17, struggling in the face of poverty, unemployment and addiction. It has special care for prisoners and for those integrating with their local community from prison or addiction therapy. There are volunteer opportunities for Mentors and Tutor Support.

Michael Doorly, Head of Active Citizenship, Concern Worldwide will talk about Concern’s flagship schools activity and the approx. 150 schools that take part annually. The Debates give senior cycle students the opportunity to research and debate issues which affect those living in the developing world. Volunteers can participate as Debate Adjudicators.

Ahmed Gadaf will talk about the Horn of Africa People’s Aid (HAPA). HAPA seeks to improve education of the Horn of Africa Communities resident in Ireland by organising tutoring clubs for both teenagers & adults; and by advising on educational opportunities available in Ireland. Volunteers can participate by being subject tutors and helping with conversational English.

Parween Arkawazi, who previously lectured in Baghdad University, currently volunteers as a Conversational English Tutor with the Dublin Central Mission and will talk about her experience volunteering in Ireland.

As you can see it promises to be an engaging evening!
