Article written by Tina Butler, Manager of Star of the Sea Playgroup
Star of the Sea Playgroup was established in 1987. It was set up by Star of the Sea BNS on Leahy’s Terrace in Sandymount to service the community childcare needs of the residents of Sandymount, Irishtown and Ringsend.
The pre school service began life in the BNS itself but soon relocated to the grounds of the BNS into a prefab building to the foreground of the property. Over the years the group developed into a school and now caters for twenty pre-school aged children.
I am the current Manager and have been so since November 2010. In that time I have developed the service into an affordable structured hub of learning and exploration for the children and their parents. Using a mix of Montessori and their own pedagogy of free principles the children at Star of the Sea Playgroup are happy, intelligent little people.
Due to the higher level of education currently being provided Star of the Sea Playgroup decided to incorporate Volunteers into the school.
We acknowledge the diversity and experience Volunteers can bring to the children and the staff.
I participated in The Volunteer Management Training and confirmed that volunteer involvement is the right choice for the school. I found that the course taught me important tools to value the Volunteers and make them feel welcome.
Star of the Sea Playgroup currently has six Volunteers in place. Five of which we found through Dublin City South Volunteer Centre. All of the Volunteers have immersed themselves into the team culture of the school ethos. As a result the children love them and know that without them the school would not function as well. The children get far more one to one help with their work, which is the sole reason for the children’s advancement in their education.
The children even get to learn Spanish and Portuguese with two of the Volunteers!
Star of the Sea Playgroup would be lost without our fabulous Volunteers.
